In memory of the late Sumethirai Nandhakumaran (Sumi), we proudly dedicate this organization to continue her legacy of compassion and generosity. Sumi earned her Electronics Engineering degree from Carleton University in Ottawa and worked as an Electronics Engineer at Honeywell Aerospace in Canada.
Sumi also studied at Vembadi Girls High School and the University of Peradeniya in Sri Lanka. Her passion for education and helping those in need drives everything at Sumi Foundation. Through this foundation, we aim to carry forward her mission of empowering underprivileged children through education.

By providing equal educational opportunities, we aim to break the cycle of inaccessibility to adequate education and create a brighter future for the next generation.
Our mission is to provide underprivileged children in Sri Lanka with free early childhood education and essential life support. By empowering children with the necessary knowledge, skills, and confidence, we set them on a path to succeed not only in Grade 1 but throughout their entire educational journey and beyond.
At Sumi Foundation, we are committed to closing the educational gap by offering underprivileged children in Sri Lanka free early childhood education to boost their confidence. We provide the critical infrastructure and resources—such as school buildings, qualified teachers, uniforms, supplies, and nutritious meals—ensuring that every child begins Grade 1 on equal footing with their peers.
Investing in early childhood education, particularly for children aged 3 to 5, lays the groundwork for lifelong learning. Our successful pilot program has shown us that a strong start in these formative years leads to better educational outcomes. Now, we’re on a mission to extend this impact across Sri Lanka, giving every underprivileged child the opportunity to succeed.
Our guiding principle is to put the needs of underprivileged children at the forefront of everything we do. Whether in our actions, strategies, or marketing, we focus on positively impacting their lives.
We are committed to maintaining transparency in all aspects of our work. From how sponsorship funds are allocated to the results of our programs, we ensure that both our donors and the children we serve can trust us. Our founders cover all administrative and fundraising expenses, allowing 100% of donations to go directly to the children’s education, including teacher salaries, uniforms, supplies, and meals.
We prioritize simplicity in our operations to minimize costs and maximize the direct support we provide to Sri Lanka’s underprivileged children. Our funds are allocated efficiently and wisely, ensuring every dollar makes a difference.
